Soulful Night

The 22nd Annual Soul Food Dinner took place February 22nd here on the campus of UWSP. As a member of BSU, the Black Student Union on campus and a sister of Sigma Delta Rho sorority I was required to not just attend the event but to help cook for over 500 indivduals. It turned out to be such an enjoyable night.

Soul food is very popular among the African American community that has a southern taste and cooking style. The food that was served included but not limited to gumbo, fried chicken, greens, catfish and baked mashed potatoes. The food was very taste, but of course that was due to them allowing me in the kitchen to help cook. Besides the amazing food the Soul food dinner provide entertainment for over 500 guest. To start the dinner we were presented with prayer, a common thing for the African American "family dinner". Then we were entertained by Dr.E a education professor at Ohio State, the sisters of Sigma Gamma Rho and Delta Sigma Theta. Dr. E explain how she grew up begin a poor little girl in Cleveland going down the wrong place to a women with a PhD. As an individual of the African American community it is nice to have someone who has made it out of similar situations as you to look up to. Also as a sister of Sigma Delta Rho is was nice to have the leading ladies of the Divine 9 to look up to. They performed their stroll and gave everyone a little history of their organization. As a newly founded organization we are working to build the kind of foundations those ladies have. Over all the Soul Food dinner provided for a soul fool evening full of great food, great entertainment and great company.
